2022 Scholarship Recipient
This year’s Thomas E. Anderson Scholarship is awarded to Johnathan Lee. Johnathan is a 17 year old high school senior attending Governor John R. Rogers High School in Puyallup, Washington. His first introduction to music was at age 6 when he started learning piano. In 5th grade, he joined his elementary band program on clarinet, switching to saxophone the next year.
Over the years, Johnathan’s fascination with music has allowed him to learn any instrument he picks up. Currently, he plays saxophone, guitar, piano, clarinet, bass guitar, drums/percussion and also sings. He continues to learn any instrument he can find.
He is a member of the Rogers High School Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, Percussion Ensemble, and Concert Choir. He is also a member of the University of Puget Sound Wind Ensemble. In addition to being the South Sound Symphonic Band Student Soloist, many of his accomplishments include being a two time finalist at the MTNA National Competition for Senior Woodwind, member of the WMEA All-State and NafMe All-Northwest Honor Groups, Western International Band Clinic, PLU Northwest Symphonic Band, finalist of the KING FM Young Artist Awards, winner of the Tacoma Concert Band Student Soloist Competition, and competed at WMEA State Solo and Ensemble in five different categories, receiving first place for two.
He has been a student of Fred Winkler, Professor of Saxophone at the University of Puget Sound and Western Washington University, for three years. He is grateful for all of his teachers, mentors, friends, and family for the support they’ve given. He is planning on studying Music Performance in Saxophone at Arizona State University.
